Today we’d like to introduce you to Olivia Sperber.
Olivia, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was adopted as a baby and developed a passion for singing when I was 5 years old beginning in musical theater, local singing lessons, and dancing. For as long as I can remember, music has always been my dream, it was the first and last thing on my mind every day. Eventually, I began to think that it would be impossible to be successful in the music industry so I made the difficult decision to give it up and move onto something else. About a year later, when I was 13, I was contacted through social media by a team in Nashville about a career in Christian music. I grew up in a Christian household but never made it my identity or what I focused on throughout life. I was very hesitant going into this as I wasn’t sure what the path would look like. I took 2 years to really dive into my home church, going on mission trips in and out of the country, leading worship, participating in small groups, and forming close relationships with other Christians. After my time reconnecting with my faith and making God the center of my world, choosing to make music for His glory was the easiest decision I’ve ever made. This life doesn’t come without hardships though, through years of anxiety, mental health battles, and constant rejection I’ve learned that God is with me in the darkest valley and no matter how hard it is I have to share my story in hopes that it might touch the heart of one person.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I think if anyone says their life is easy, they’re not being honest with themselves. A lot of people think that when you become a Christian life is smooth sailing but in reality it’s quite the opposite. Trials still come your way but having God by your side changes how you approach them. A few of my biggest obstacles have been myself and my mental well being and family health challenges. I am my biggest critic and in the music industry it is so easy to beat yourself down and think you aren’t good enough or worthy of being where you are. That mindset has held me back and delayed me from following my passion with full force. When my grandma was diagnosed with cancer and my mom shortly after it was difficult to make music a priority in my life as family needed to come first. My grandma would always tell me to be proud of who I am and to not let anyone get in the way of what I love, after she passed I promised to myself that would be the way I live. As my mom continued to battle her cancer my debut single ‘Dare To Have Faith’ became my family’s anthem. That song is the epitome of strength, proving that in the toughest moments when you feel like giving up, you have to dare to keep going.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m known for my rawness and ability to connect with just about anyone I come in contact with. I’m most proud of overcoming the obstacles in my life and my ability to persevere through the hardest curveballs I’ve been thrown. I believe that my story sets me apart from others. From adoption, to mental health, to physical health, to life altering decisions, and more, my story has a variety of unexpected twists and turns and lots of moments I had to place my trust in God. I have lived so much life for being so young and while a lot of people would view that as heartbreaking, I see it as an opportunity. I was able to develop maturity at a young age, connecting with adults and sharpening my public speaking abilities. I have learned how to overcome anything with a smile on my face and try to look my best while doing it. I want everyone to know that they are seen and to never be scared to share their story, you never know who you could help. I enjoy crafting lyrics that people can relate to and feel as if they are written for the listener. I am so excited to share my next single ‘Winds Waves & Worries’ on September 25th. This song reminds us that just as every wind blows and every wave recedes, every worry will eventually disappear. I hold this song very close to my heart and can’t wait to finally share it with the world!
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Im actually pretty shy! I know it sounds crazy, how can someone who needs to put themselves out in the world for their career be shy? Truth is, I get extremely insecure in public. I’m not the kind of person who likes to embarrass myself or run up to a new person to introduce myself. My socials may say otherwise and everyone who knows me views me as an extrovert but in reality, I enjoy keeping to myself a lot of the time.
