Today we’d like to introduce you to Zakk Riffle.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was born in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and music was in my life before I even had a choice in it. My dad’s a drummer, and I spent a lot of my childhood watching him perform on stage. That was where it started for me. I picked up guitar at 12, and that changed everything — it gave me a real foundation and a deep love for music that’s carried me ever since.
That early start took me all over before I found my way back home. I spent years in Norfolk, Virginia, learning the production side of things — studio work, playing in bands, cutting my teeth on the technical side of making music. Because I was doing production and studio work from such a young age, I ended up covering all kinds of genres instead of sticking to just one lane. From there I moved to Colorado, where I stepped out on my own as a solo artist, writing and producing my own music. I played hundreds of shows across the country during that stretch, chasing it on stages in city after city.
But underneath all of it, I was fighting something a lot of people never saw. My addiction took hold hard while I was in Colorado, and it followed me through all that travel back and forth between states. The shows kept happening, the music kept coming out, but I was falling apart in ways that had nothing to do with the stage.
Eventually it caught up to me completely, and I made the decision to get help. I went through a treatment facility and did the work to actually get clean — not white-knuckle it, but rebuild from the ground up. That process is what brought me back to Pennsylvania, back to where I started. Home ended up being exactly where I needed to be to heal.
Today I’m sober, I’m back doing the music and production work I love, and I’ve built a page and a community around sharing that journey honestly — the addiction, the treatment, the shows, all of it — because I know what it’s like to feel like you’re the only one going through it. If any part of my story helps someone else take the next step, or feel a little less alone today, then all of it was worth telling.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it hasn’t been smooth at all — addiction was the biggest struggle I’ve faced, and it hit hardest during my time in Colorado. I was playing hundreds of shows, building a career I loved, but that lifestyle and the constant back-and-forth travel between states made it easy for things to spiral without anyone around me really seeing it happen. From the outside it looked like things were going well — the shows kept coming, the music kept getting made — but I was struggling in a way that had nothing to do with the music itself.
It eventually got bad enough that I couldn’t keep pushing through it on my own. I made the choice to go into a treatment facility and actually do the work to get clean, instead of just trying to grind it out and hope it fixed itself. That wasn’t an easy road either — rebuilding from scratch, physically and mentally, takes time, and there’s no shortcut through it.
The biggest lesson for me was that you can’t outrun what you’re dealing with just by staying busy, even with something you love like music. Getting honest with myself and asking for help was the turning point. It’s part of why I’m so open about it now — I don’t want anyone else to think they have to hide what they’re going through just because things look fine on the surface.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My work centers on music — I’m a guitarist, producer, and songwriter, and because I got into studio and production work at such a young age, I’ve never stuck to one genre. I cover a wide range, and that versatility is a big part of what I bring to the table. Beyond writing and performing my own music, I also work with other artists on mixing, mastering, and production, and I help musicians with content strategy and marketing for their own careers — everything from building an online presence to figuring out how to actually grow an audience, not just make noise.
Outside the studio, I run a platform built around my sobriety journey, where I share my story openly and build community with people who are navigating recovery themselves. It’s turned into something bigger than I expected — a space where people can talk honestly about addiction and recovery without the shame that usually comes attached to it.
What I’m most proud of is being able to hold both of those things at once — staying active and successful in music while being completely transparent about my recovery. A lot of people feel like they have to choose between their career and being honest about their struggles. I’ve tried to prove you don’t have to hide one to have the other.
What sets me apart is probably that combination: I’m not just a musician telling people to follow their dreams, and I’m not just a recovery page posting quotes. I’ve actually lived both sides — the shows, the studio work, the grind of the industry, and the addiction and treatment that came with it — and I bring all of that real experience into everything I create, whether it’s a song, a mix for another artist, or a post for someone having a hard day in their sobriety.
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite childhood memory is being at one of my dad’s shows, watching him play drums from the side of the stage. I had a pair of headphones on to protect my ears from how loud it was, and I was up in the arms of one of the venue’s bouncers so I could actually see over the crowd. I remember just watching my dad up there, completely locked in, and feeling like I was part of something bigger than myself. That’s probably the exact moment music got its hooks in me — I just didn’t know it yet.
