Life & Work with Kailin Bouse of Pennsylvania

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kailin Bouse.

Hi Kailin, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I always say I didn’t really choose this work; it sort of chose me.

I’ve been interested in spirituality, nature, music, and the deeper questions of life for as long as I can remember, but my path into wellness really began through my own life experiences. I went through quite a bit of loss and hardship at a young age, and I think I started searching early for ways to make sense of being human and all of the beautiful, painful, strange things that come along with it.

I was in a serious car accident in my teens that left me dealing with chronic pain, and that was actually what first brought me to yoga as part of my own healing. Both of my parents are physically handicapped from separate, non-related life-changing injuries as well, so caregiving and helping others has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. Singing and playing music was always another form of healing for me, long before I ever knew it would eventually become part of my work.

That search eventually led me deeper into yoga. What began as something I loved and used for my own healing became a much bigger part of my life, and I eventually spent three years living and studying at the Himalayan Institute of Yoga Science and Philosophy in Honesdale. After working my way up in a large company and realizing I didn’t want to spend my life working a job that caused me so much stress, I moved to the yoga ashram in 2018 and immersed myself in a new way of living.. Yoga, meditation, philosophy, reiki and holistic wellness became my new focus.

While I was living at the Himalayan Institute, I lost my longtime partner, Dan, to cancer in 2020. That experience transformed me in ways that are difficult to put neatly into words. Grief changed the way I looked at life, death, spirituality, and what it actually means to be here. So many of the things I had been studying stopped being ideas and became things I had to actually live. It deepened my relationship with myself and with these practices, and ultimately changed the direction of my life.

During that time, a dear friend and fellow yogi named Ryan became a huge part of my healing journey. Our friendship gave me a sense of support and connection during an incredibly difficult chapter, and Ryan also introduced me to a deeper relationship with nature. He showed me how healing the natural world could be, and spending time outdoors became an important part of my own recovery.

After leaving the Institute in 2021, I started writing and sharing more of my own experiences and began teaching, offering Reiki and sound therapy, leading workshops, and traveling to different spaces to share this work. It grew very organically, mostly through word of mouth and people connecting with what I was doing. During this time, Ryan and I continued to grow closer, and our friendship eventually turned into love. We are now happily married.

“Kailin of Earth” actually started as nothing more than an online screen name, but somewhere along the way it became the name people knew me and my work by, and eventually my personal brand. To me, being “of Earth” is something we all share. We are human beings belonging to this planet and to one another, and so much of my work is about helping us reconnect with that humanness, with nature, with each other, and with ourselves.

As Kailin of Earth continued to grow, Ryan and I started dreaming about giving it a physical home. In October 2023, we took the leap and opened Kailin of Earth Wellness Studio in Clarks Summit. What started with me carrying yoga mats and instruments all around the city has grown into a beautiful community with multiple teachers, daily classes, workshops, trainings, sound baths, and events.

Today I’m an E-RYT 500 Yoga and Meditation Instructor, Certified Sound Therapist, and Reiki Master Teacher. At the heart of my work, I use yoga, meditation, sound, energy work, music, and our connection to nature to help people slow down, reconnect with their bodies, and remember what it feels like to simply be human. I think ultimately, everything I offer is another doorway back to the same place… ourselves.

Looking back, I can see how all of these seemingly separate pieces of my life were quietly leading me here. I really do feel like I’m walking the path I was born to walk, and I’ve learned to trust it enough to keep following it and allow it to unfold.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely not, but I also don’t think I would be doing this work without the struggles that brought me here!

I’ve experienced quite a bit of loss, trauma, chronic pain, and change throughout my life. There have been seasons where I’ve had to completely rebuild my understanding of who I was and what I thought my life was going to look like. Grief in particular has been one of my greatest teachers, and over time I’ve learned that even our most painful experiences can be transformed into something meaningful.

Owning a studio has brought a completely different kind of challenge. There is so much responsibility that comes with caring for a business, a community, and a team while also remembering to care for myself. I wear so many different hats on any given day, and learning how to balance being a guide, business owner, leader, wife, and simply a human being has probably been one of the greatest lessons of this chapter.

I don’t teach from a place of having life figured out. I teach as someone who has lived a lot of life, continues to live it, and has found practices that genuinely help me move through it. I think that honesty is a huge part of what people connect with in my work.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Kailin of Earth is a yoga and holistic wellness studio, but what we offer goes quite a bit deeper than movement alone. My personal work weaves together traditional yoga and meditation, sound therapy, Reiki, music, nervous system regulation, spirituality, and our connection to nature. I’m probably best known locally for my sound baths, where I combine a large collection of therapeutic instruments with professional live vocals and music to create truly immersive experiences for meditative relief and reflection.

What sets our studio apart is that we’ve been very intentional about protecting the heart of these practices. Our yoga classes aren’t just exercise classes with yoga poses. We incorporate breathwork, meditation, philosophy, hands-on support, and opportunities to actually understand what you’re practicing and why. Classes are intimate, props and modifications are encouraged, and there is a real emphasis on meeting people where they are.

Beyond our regular classes, we offer Reiki sessions and certifications, sound therapy, meditation, workshops, ceremonies, special events, and collaborations throughout the community. I also bring this work into schools, colleges, businesses, recovery spaces, and other organizations, which has allowed it to reach people who may never walk into a traditional wellness studio.

I think what I’m most proud of is the community we’ve created. People genuinely know each other here. They stay after class and talk, they support one another, and they feel comfortable showing up exactly as they are. I never wanted to create a place where wellness felt performative or exclusive. I wanted to create a space where ancient practices could remain meaningful and sacred while still feeling approachable, human, and relevant to real life. I think that balance is what makes Kailin of Earth what it is.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
I don’t know that I have one specific favorite childhood memory. I think what I miss most is actually the feeling of being a child. That sense of wonder and lightness before you really understood the weight of the world. Being completely present, feeling free, connected to everything around you, and finding something magical in the simplest things. I think a lot of my life and work now is actually about finding my way back to that place, and helping other people find their way back too.
