Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
. I have lived in Bethlehem my entire life. Growing up, I always wanted to be a professional athlete. However, while out on the college football field one day, I had an epiphany: I wasn’t going to play pro ball. But I was the barber for all the guys on the team.When I came home and told my dad that I wanted to pursue barbering, he gave me all the encouragement I needed. He smiled and said, “I never met a poor barber.” Growing up, my dad had taken me to many local barbershops. The barbers were always great guys who seemed to do very well for themselves.With my new path in mind, I decided to forgo college and enrolled in beauty school. Because my mother and sister were both beauticians, I knew beauty school would give me a unique advantage. It allowed me to learn both women’s and men’s hairdressing.After earning my license, I landed my first job at CJ’s Barbers in Whitehall. It was there that I met Jo Egner, who became my mentor. Jo taught me everything about the craft of barbering and the business of running a successful shop. After about a year, she gave me a pivotal piece of advice: go back home to Bethlehem and open my own shop.I have been blessed ever since.That was 34 years ago, and I am still going strong. Over the decades, I have been fortunate enough to mentor the next generation, with more than 10 of my barbers going on to open their own shops. I have watched lives transform and have cut hair for multiple generations of local families.None of this would have been possible without the incredible woman in my corner. My wife, Yvonne, and I have been married since the shop opened in 1993, and her unwavering support has been my foundation. She is also a hairdresser—in fact, we met back in beauty school. Looking back, it is clear that God had a beautiful plan for us from 1993 onward. Today, we are blessed with three grown children, two grandchildren, and a wonderful son-in-law.God has truly blessed my life, and I give Him all the glory. Jesus Christ is my Savior; I am so grateful for His blessings and honor Him in everything I do.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Building a business in my hometown has been one of the greatest blessings of my life. Since we first opened our doors in 1993, the Garza name has stood for more than just a great haircut. It has stood for family, faith, and community.Over the past 34 years, I have learned that true entrepreneurship is not just about the busy days and the packed chairs; it is about how you handle the quiet struggles. Business will always test you. You will face rejection, lose customers, and experience the sting of watching talented people you invested in leave to go elsewhere.Early on, I realized that the key to success is moving past rejection quickly. You cannot dwell on what is lost. I also learned that to survive the unpredictable twists of business, you must keep your inner life in perfect order. For me, that format has always been simple: God first, my wife Yvonne second, my children third, and then everything else.With that foundation, every struggle became an opportunity. When those multiple barbers left my shop over the decades, I chose not to see it as a loss. Today, over 10 of those men and women run their own successful shops. Their success is a profound testimony to my life’s work. It means I successfully passed along the vital life and business lessons they needed to thrive.
