Today we’d like to introduce you to Prakash Gurung.
Hi Prakash , can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My name is **Prakash Gurung**, and I am originally from Nepal. My journey in the restaurant industry has been an exciting one, spanning nearly **25 years**.
I began building my culinary career in India, where I worked as a **Head Chef** in different regions, including Kerala and Gujarat. Working in different places gave me valuable experience with a variety of cuisines, ingredients, and cooking styles. After gaining experience in India, I returned to Nepal, where I continued developing my career in the restaurant industry.
Later, I was fortunate to receive an opportunity to come to the United States. Since then, I have continued working in the restaurant industry and pursuing my passion for food and hospitality. Over the years, I have learned that success comes from hard work, dedication, consistency, and a genuine love for what you do.
Today, after almost 25 years in the restaurant industry, I am proud of the journey that has taken me from Nepal to India and eventually to the United States. Every step has taught me something valuable and helped me become the person and chef I am today.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it has not always been a smooth road. Like many people who build their careers from the ground up, I have faced many challenges along the way. Moving from Nepal to India and working in different places such as Kerala and Gujarat meant adapting to new environments, cultures, languages, and ways of working.
One of the biggest challenges was being away from home and family while working hard to build my career. The restaurant industry is also very demanding, with long hours, high pressure, and the constant responsibility of maintaining quality and keeping customers happy.
Coming to the United States was another major change in my life. Starting over in a new country brought its own challenges, but I stayed focused, worked hard, and continued learning every day. My passion for cooking and the restaurant business helped me overcome those difficult moments.
Looking back, I believe the struggles made me stronger and helped me grow. After almost 25 years in the restaurant industry, I appreciate every opportunity and lesson that has helped bring me to where I am today.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
My business is called **Indian Curry Lounge**, and we are proud to serve our community through two locations in **Harrisburg and Lancaster, Pennsylvania**. Our goal is to share the rich flavors, traditions, and hospitality of authentic Indian cuisine while also creating a welcoming dining experience for everyone.
We specialize in a wide variety of Indian dishes, including flavorful curries, traditional tandoori dishes, vegetarian options, and other authentic Indian specialties. With nearly 25 years of experience in the restaurant industry, I bring my passion, culinary experience, and dedication to quality into everything we serve.
What sets Indian Curry Lounge apart is our commitment to authentic flavors, fresh ingredients, consistency, and customer service. We want every customer to feel welcome and enjoy not just a meal, but a complete dining experience.
I am especially proud of the brand we are building and the relationships we have developed with our customers and community. Growing from a personal passion for cooking into a business with two locations is something I am very proud of.
At Indian Curry Lounge, we want our customers to know that we put our heart into our food and service. Whether someone is enjoying a casual meal with family and friends, trying Indian food for the first time, or looking for authentic flavors they already love, we want Indian Curry Lounge to be a place they can trust and come back to again and again.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
My advice for finding a mentor or building a strong network is to be open to learning from everyone around you. A mentor does not always have to be someone with an official title. Throughout my career, I have learned from experienced chefs, restaurant owners, coworkers, customers, and other people in the industry.
For me, working hard, showing respect, and building genuine relationships has worked very well. The restaurant industry is a people-focused business, so networking and maintaining a good reputation are very important. I believe in listening to others, asking questions, learning from their experiences, and always being willing to improve.
I would also encourage people to connect with other business owners and professionals in their community. You never know where an opportunity or valuable relationship may come from. Most importantly, be genuine, stay humble, and be consistent. Over time, hard work and good relationships can open many doors.
