Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Kelsey.
Hi Alex, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’ve always been a creative person, but for a long time, that creativity showed up through marketing. Before starting my photography business, I spent several years working as a Marketing Director, where I got to do a little bit of everything — strategy, branding, social media, content creation, communications, events, and figuring out how to tell a story in a way that genuinely connects with people.
That experience taught me so much about business and marketing, but I always felt like there was a piece of me that wanted to create something of my own. I’ve always wanted to be an entrepreneur, and I knew that eventually I wanted to build something that felt completely me.
Photography became that outlet.
What started as a creative passion slowly turned into a business, and I realized that all of the things I had learned through marketing actually gave me a really unique perspective as a photographer. I’m not just thinking about how to take a beautiful photo — I’m thinking about the story, the brand, the feeling, the details, and how an image is going to make someone experience that person or business.
But on a much more personal level, I’m also a wife and a mom to two beautiful little boys. My husband has always been incredibly supportive of me and my dreams, and having the ability to build a career that gives me flexibility to be present with my boys has been incredibly important to me.
Being able to build something of my own while still being there for the little moments at home is something I don’t take for granted. Entrepreneurship, for me, has never just been about owning a business or having a career. It’s about creating a life that allows me to pursue something I’m passionate about while also being the mom and wife I want to be.
The creative piece is really who I am at my core. I love taking an idea and turning it into something tangible, whether that’s documenting a family, capturing a special event, or helping a brand create imagery that actually feels like them.
That’s really how Captured by Alex Kelsey came to be. It’s the intersection of everything I’ve always loved — creativity, storytelling, marketing, people, family, and entrepreneurship. I’m still growing and evolving, but I finally feel like I’m building something that brings all of those pieces of me together.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Definitely not! There have been plenty of bumps along the way. Building a business comes with a lot of trial and error — figuring out what works, what doesn’t, and learning to adapt along the way.
There have been opportunities that didn’t work out, ideas that needed to be reworked, and plenty of moments of self-doubt. But I think those challenges have ultimately helped me become more confident in my direction and more intentional about the business I’m building. I also think seeing individuals that I work with be so excited about their photos and also continue to share my business by word-of-mouth makes me truly grateful.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My photography style is editorial branding and creative documentary style storytelling.
Since marketing is very much a part of who I am, branding just come second nature and it’s something that I’m super passionate about, but I’m also so passionate about being a mom. That in itself makes me feel so, so lucky to be a part of other family’s special once in a lifetime moments with their little ones.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I think starting a business at any point for any reason is risky. Putting yourself out there and starting something new completely on your own is scary but receiving so much validation just over the first few months has been so rewarding. And motivating.
