Hi Amanda, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
When I was planning my own wedding, I was looking for vendors who would make the day truly enchanting. This was the first time I had heard of wedding painting.
As a lifelong artist, albeit one who had not found a foothold for making my art professionally, finding this route was a revelation. I started developing my own business immediately–it even ended up paying for some of my own wedding!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Pursuit of art is rarely a smooth road, but it’s so inherently joyful and fulfilling that it’s worth pushing through. Starting, in particular, there were a lot of 12 hour days, laborious weekends, late nights. You’re always on, always looking for client outreach, opportunities to grow your business, chances to reach new people. Things gradually got easier as I became more well known, and as word of mouth began to be my most powerful means of advertising. However, circumstances led to my partner and I moving from DC to Pittsburgh, and it felt like I had to start from ground zero, as a total unknown. To add insult to injury, my Google business page was taken down because my address change was flagged as “suspicious.” Of course, the address change was because I really had moved, but anyone who has ever lost anything due to an automatic system within a company as big as Google can tell you how impossible it is to appeal such decisions. Losing those 5-star reviews was probably the most painful part.
That said, you don’t just quit when things are hard. You get back up, and you start again. And in my case, you make a new Google business page.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Every artist is set apart by the very nature of creating art. Artwork is driven by the soul of the artist, and the imprint of the individual is indelible. My style is distinctly my own, as is the case for other wedding artists.
I’ve had the pleasure of meeting some other wedding painters, and every one of them has a book of work that is unmistakably theirs. It’s great–it prevents us from competing–because anyone who really wants a work of art wants it in a style that speaks to them. Someone who loves my paintings would be unhappy with someone else’s, and vice-versa.
For those seeking wedding painters, I can’t recommend enough looking at their style, not just their prices.
