Today we’d like to introduce you to Brian Lahr.
Hi Brian , can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
In 2005, I walked into a small studio that smelled of sweat and incense, not entirely sure what Pai Lum Kung Fu even meant — only that something about the fluid, striking forms called to me. My instructor sharp corrections I didn’t understand yet: weight distribution, breath, the space between stillness and correct alignment. I kept coming back.
The years passed like that. Forms broken down and rebuilt. Bruises that turned into lessons. Slowly I realized discipline wasn’t punishment — it was a kind of freedom. I watched my own body change, then my mind. By my third year I wasn’t just training technique anymore. I was training patience, humility, the stubbornness it takes to fail in front of people and get back up.
The years stacked on top of each other. Doubts I didn’t tell anyone about. But breakthroughs too — the day a concept finally clicked, the day sparring stopped feeling like survival and started feeling like conversation.
By 2014, something in me had settled into certainty. I leased a small space — imperfect floors, a mirror wall I installed with my father — and opened my own school. The first students trickled in: a shy kid dragged there by his mother, a retiree looking for balance, someone recovering from a hard year who just needed somewhere to put their hands.
I taught them what had been taught to me, adjusting for their bodies, their fears, their reasons for walking through the door. Some stayed a season. Some stayed for years. A few became instructors themselves.
Twelve years now. I’ve resurfaced the floor twice. Scars inside the building that were produced by the training. But the room still fills every week — new faces next to old ones, all of us chasing the same thing I chased back in 2005: the moment that Pai Lum Kung Fu becomes a part of you.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has been a very steady road in regards to training people and moving them forward. That is a very easy road to keep if you move forward well. So the heart of the school has always been a very smooth ride. Operating a business has its own struggles but they drive for external friction outside of my control
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Nestled in the heart of Central Pennsylvania, Mechanicsburg Kung Fu Center carries forward a proud second-generation lineage rooted in the Pai family tradition. What began as one student’s dedication to the art has grown into a full-time martial arts school serving the local community with authentic, time-honored instruction.
We offer a well-rounded curriculum designed to meet students where they are:
Kung Fu — traditional forms, discipline, and self-defense rooted in the Pai lineage
Tai Chi — slow, flowing movement for balance, focus, and internal strength
Yoga — flexibility, mindfulness, and physical wellness to complement martial arts training
Our doors are open to students of all ages and backgrounds, from energetic kids building confidence and discipline, to adults sharpening skill and focus, to senior citizens seeking gentle, low-impact movement for balance and vitality. Whatever stage of life you’re in, there’s a place for you on our floor.
As a full-time school with deep roots in tradition, Mechanicsburg Kung Fu Center isn’t just a place to learn technique — it’s a community built on respect, patience, and the shared pursuit of growth. We’re proud to carry the Pai family heritage forward, one student at a time, right here in Central Pennsylvania.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I think my optimistic nature really helps keep a positive energy in the school, and being an extraverted person who genuinely loves being around people and helping them makes a big difference too.
