Today we’d like to introduce you to Kym Gable.
Hi Kym, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always been a performer – dancing, singing, acting at a young age. I channeled that into a career in broadcast journalism, having anchored my college newscast, then obtaining anchor positions in my hometown of Wheeling, West Virginia. I came to the Pittsburgh Market in 2000 as an anchor/reporter – up until I was unexpectedly and uncerimoniously terminated in August 2025. Ironically, 2 moths later, I won an Emmy that our 6-ocklock newscast was nominated for months prior. I’m a natural ‘coach’ and have helped hundreds of individuals and corporations elevate the way they communicate, so that was a natural transition for me as well – as I am now promoting that part of my business more openly. During the last 20 years of my career, I was technically a part-time freelancer even though I was a full time anchor. I insisted on being home as much as possible with my twin daughters. Looking back, I know I could have made a lot more money, but I am so gratified and so comforted that I made that choice to be with my family as much as possible. You can’t have it all, but sometimes you can create a work/life structure that puts family first.
During my time as an anchor and feature reporter, I would often tell stories about unsung heroes, uplifting events and people, and neighbors helping neighbors. I channeled that into my volunteer position as a chapter leader for Inspired Women Paying It Forward, a charity support organization that just reached more than $1Million in grassroots giving.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Broadcast journalism can be a beautiful industry and a brutal one, for women in particular. The compensation discrepencies (I’ve always made less than my male co-anchors) The pressure to be thin, beautiful, and ageless. Those burdens weighed heavily on my during my last 6 or 7 years in the business. I would starve myself and spend money on aggressive cosmetic treatments in an effort to appear more youthful.
And what I mentioned on the previous page — the pressure of ‘doing it all,’ Taking care of your family while also excelling at work. I truly believe there is no ‘balance’ for working moms. The scales tip and dip on a daily basis. Rarely were they level for me. Fortitude, resilience, and compassionate mentors and role models served me well.
My daughters are now 22 and serve as my assistant directors at our chapter of Inspired Women Paying It Forward. So, we are truly raising and grooming the next generation of philanthropic and business leaders.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
After 3 decades in TV News, and as a keynote speaker and event emcee, I know what works on camera and on stage. I’ve mentored and coached dozens of young women in this business, and I always preach: Cultivate other skills. Not a back-up plan, not a Plan B, just an expansion of YOUR plan. For me, that meant real estate investing, oil and gas contracts, cryptocurrency investment, small business ownership, construction and development and so much more. But recently, I’ve been leaning into the coaching that I love, helping individuals and businesses elevate the way they communicate, and doing it from an informed platform. Right now, I’m working with a women who is starting a new business and wants the perfect pitch for potential clients, a major construction company that wanted more media training for its teams, and a government agency that wants to ‘polish the presence. of their C-Suite leaders. Witnessing the transformation we’re able to make in a short amount of time is pretty remarkable and I’m proud of the systems and took-kits I’ve developed to make it happen.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I owe my entire broadcasting career to a college professor who ‘saw something in me.’ during my Senior year when I realized I needed one ore credit to graduate. I was not planning on being a broadcaster, but a public relations director. Chris Lee was the TV Broadcasting head, and said, “Why don’t you anchor the college newscast next semester. I just have a feeling.” And that was it. 2 months after I was terminated, he sat in the audience as I was inducted into West Liberty University’s Wall of Honor. I was a full circle moment to have the man who sparked my career also be present as one flame dimmed, but another was ignited.
Beth Caldwell, founder of Pittsburgh Professional Women, my long-time friend and personal coach
Debra Dion Krischke, Founder of Inspired Women Paying It Forward, who inspired me to launch the 2nd chapter in the South Hills of Pittsburgh in 2017. We now have 8 chapters in Western PA, and one in Chicago. All volunteers, all donor driven.
