Today we’d like to introduce you to Pnpmar.
Hi Pnpmar, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve always been very poetic and good in English. From my story telling, to my vulnerability and to the energy that is put in the song for the listener to feel. So I take a lot of pride in my work. I get my good English skills and poetic skills from my mother “Inez Mckinney” and of course the great teachers I had that took the time to help me understand everything that comes with the English subject. Thus I gained a natural love for it while at the same time always loving music since a kid, like most artist. When I first started to make music, write lyrics and compose full songs I was 16. I was freestyling before that over popular beats on Instagram like every one else during that era of 2016. So by time I went to highschool people seen my video a lot and it surprised me. I was “the rapper on Instagram”. My friend Aquil (artist name”Quilly Davinci” was a big inspiration and helping hand with getting me started on recording, mixing, mastering and composing my own music in fl studio. From there I would balance school, upcoming goals and practicing music. By 18 is when I decided I would take it serious. Though I was having a lot of internal and emotional obstacles with life. I still kept pushing and trying to chase this light that wants me to keep going and keep improving. I see that as passion but also as a sign from god. The artists that inspired and touched my heart at that time were xxxtentacion, pnb rock, Kendrick Lamar, Dababy, ToryLanez, Joyner Lucas, Tupac, Biggie, lloyd banks, Uncle Luke (taught me to be blunt in my music if I want and free), many YouTube artist and much more. Basically anything I heard and took a liking too. Even in the pop and rnb scene. Especially alternative music which i actually love just as much as Hiphop and Rnb. By 18 I did more research on music promotions, recording, mixing, production and of course performing. I found a service called Afton which has many venues for artist to sign up, sell tickets and perform for a live audience. I sold ticket to my family, friends and people in highschool. Afton venues are mostly at local bars and events. So I signed up and did it with a few friends who all still make music today. They are G30, Quilly Davinci and 1400mari. The show was great and we turned the venue up. That moment was amazing and unforgettable for me because the crowd had no reaction to many of the other artist. But once we went up and took over, more people randomly passing by came in and packed the place out. From there we knew that our music was great individually and together even though we didn’t have a fan base yet. After that I did coast to coast live in New York. Music maestro was one of the judges and a producer that worked on music with drake whose name I can’t remember. (I’m terrible with remembering names lol) but I’ve been improving. Coast to coast was fun and I did great. But I also hated that day because it was so smoky in the venue that I got high before performing. I did great vocally and performing but my stage presence wasn’t the best because I was under the influence and could barely move around how I wanted to lol. So my lesson was no performing high even though I didn’t do it on purpose of course. After that I started doing music videos which was very fun and I met my videographer 30shotsproductions. He just had started out and today he is amazing at what he does. Then Covid happened and that was the best thing for me. It gave me nothing but time to do school and focus and learn to get better at music and producing. It was a blessing for those who used their time wisely and I did. I got better very fast and my recording style of punching in and freestyling became even better. So did my writing when I decided not to freestyle. My story telling, composing and visual ideas also improved greatly. I was doing something right. But yet again I wasn’t as consistent with my output because of emotional offsets. As I was a young man who was very connected with his emotions. I still made music but I wasn’t dropping as much. As I lost love, lost friends, made new friends, found new love, lost hobbies and gain new ones. I became better at putting it into my music and being more vulnerable musically because I realized by 21 i literally have nothing to lose and if I love music then why not fully connect with it how I naturally do when I’m by myself. So I took a note from my culture as a Jamaican, a note from bob Marley, a note from reggae and that is that the music isn’t only about the words or the beat. It’s about how it makes you feel. That opens up so many doors in my mind as I realized I’ve always made music from skil and energy. Whenever I was emotionally offsets I wouldn’t create or wouldn’t create well. So I got over that in 2021. Thought today I still struggle with it sometimes because being a baby adult lol isn’t easy you know. Once you hit 21 your a one year old adult is the funny way to look at it. You realize the things that happened while a teen will hurt and hit way harder as an adult. Something I knew young because I always been naturally wise but it’s always different when you are the one wearing the shoes in first person. Now today I still make music. Of course theirs much more to the story and journey ahead but we can save those details for when we build this community up. Word to Gutter Flow Entertainment (the name of my self made label).
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road. Some of the struggles are self doubt, balancing regular life with pursuing your dream, emotional turmoil and keep yourself grounded so you can properly create. These things will hold you back or even slow you down and for me it slowed me down. I kept creating but it just wasn’t the same. Until I would center myself. As I should cause I’m a Libra and we are a scale. I seek balance at all times so it only makes sense when my energy is off that things are hard to get done. (Let not take the zodiacs so serious but I dead serious about being balanced).
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
My self made label is called Gutter Flow Entertainment. This brand represents starting from the gutter (the bottom). No matter what your lowest point is and building up to something great. Everyone starts at a low point so I don’t want people to think it means starting in the hood or going from broke to rich. It means starting from any point of your life that is the lowest and most difficult and making something from nothing. That is what it means to see gutter flow entertainment and be part of the journey. What separates me from others is my bluntness, boldness and my lack of fear to just try things and put myself out there. When people see me I want them to think “hey nothing is stopping me but me so fuck it I’ll try it”. That is what would make me very proud of the brand I’m trying to build. Just do what you want no matter your situation because a person with a plan will always receive something grand. Gutter Flow Entertainment the symbol of honest hard work, determination and focus. It is fierce and scared of no one.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I feel that my determination, humor, problem solving, environmental adaptation, social skills, emotional regulation, metacognition and a just do it attitude are the best and most important qualities to my success.
