Today we’d like to introduce you to Sabeen Zia.
Hi Sabeen, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
With a background in cosmetic formulation, production, and marketing, I launched Muskaan Makeup only to face the steep financial barriers and retail gatekeeping that challenge independent brands. Recognizing how difficult it is for unique formulas to gain traction without massive ad budgets, I created a dedicated retail space to give high-quality indie beauty labels the shelf space and visibility they deserve.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Running an independent business is an unpredictable path, filled with seasonal shifts, staffing hurdles, and restocking difficulties especially when working with niche global brands. Closing my second location after two years was an extraordinarily tough call, but recognizing the location wasn’t right made it the necessary one. While navigating that closure temporarily disrupted our broader operations, it ultimately allowed me to refocus our energy, reestablish balance, and ensure our original location continues to succeed long-term
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Located in Philadelphia, The Indie Shelf is a curated retail space and platform built to bridge the gap between exceptional independent beauty brands and conscious consumers. Born out of firsthand experience navigating cosmetic formulation, product development, and launching my own line, Muskaan Makeup, The Indie Shelf was created to dismantle traditional retail gatekeeping. We give high-performing, clean indie brands the physical shelf space, visibility, and retail opportunities they deserve without requiring massive ad budgets.
We specialize in thoughtfully curated skincare, haircare, cosmetics, body care, and natural fragrances sourced from independent, small-batch makers around the world. The Indie Shelf is known for introducing beauty enthusiasts to hidden gem products that ideally cannot be found in standard big-box stores or mass retail chains.
I believe my biggest differentiator is that my product curation is backed by my educational and professional background. Having worked across formulations, production, and marketing, the vetting process goes far beyond clever packaging. I evaluate products based on formula integrity, real effectiveness, and ethical craftsmanship. Because I understand the operational realities of independent makers, I operate the shop with brands as true partners to founders rather than transactional buyers, allowing the shop and my staff to become a trusted quality filter for our community.
At The Indie Shelf, customer care is built on friendship, trust, and real expertise. We create a welcoming, pressure-free environment where shopping feels like chatting with a friend. Leveraging a cosmetic chemist’s perspective, we replace beauty industry fear-mongering and hype with honest, educational guidance tailored to each person’s skin and budget. Instead of pushing sales, we ask the right questions and offer generous sampling so customers feel completely confident before they commit. This relationship first approach has cultivated a deeply loyal community of shoppers we know by name and genuinely consider friends. They are the heart of our store and the sole reason we are in business today.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Running a small business is definitely a wild, bittersweet ride, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world. Every single day is a gamble; spending a tight budget on unheard-of indie brands and just hoping customers connect with them especially if it’s affected by market trend. Taking risks is how we grow, which is why I took my biggest leap yet by opening a second location. Even though that spot turned out to be the wrong fit, there was really no way of knowing without taking the chance. It was a tough lesson learned, but it gave me a much clearer roadmap for whenever we’re ready to expand again down the road.
