Check Out Shane McCaulley’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shane McCaulley.

Hi Shane, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Sure! Based out of Pittsburgh, PA- After overcoming addiction in 2023, I took the plunge into doing art in the freelance and Animation spaces full-time. I decided that I didn’t want to spend a day longer NOT doing the thing I was born to do!

Working my way up from Facebook and Instagram commissions, all the way to storyboarding for companies like Southwest Airlines, the NFL, MLB, and more- I learned that with hard work and drive, you can achieve things you never thought possible for yourself!

Now I work on a self-produced Adult Sci-Fi Animated series called MTRRDR! (Pronounced Meter Reader!) that can be found on Youtube and Newgrounds! I’m hoping to get eyes on it, as it’s the culmination of years of hard work and dedication to the medium that taught me so much about myself!

I hope that my story can be an inspiration to anyone whose gone through addiction or just wanted to follow their dreams! It really is possible >:)

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Sure, Freelance can be a rough mistress! Tight deadlines, scope creep, and ever changing creative briefs can have you tearing your hair out, but I always find there’s a way to budget my time and/or creatively solve a problem. That keeps me out of hot water.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
In addition to doing Commercial Storyboard work, right now the biggest thing for me is MTRRDR! which is an Adult Animated Sci-Fi series that I write, animate, and produce myself, along with a very talented voice cast!

MTRRDR! Follows the story of Bazonkazonk, a meter maid in a sci-fi dystopian city. When a simple meter diagnostic turns into a full-blown murder mystery, It’s up to Zonk and the rest of the Meter Corp to get to the bottom of things!

MTRRDR! features a diverse cast of characters, and we explore complex themes like Agency, Loss, Astral Projection, and even Quantum Entanglement. It’s a big universe, and nothing is really off the table! (or over the line!)

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I’m a huge fan of classic Sci-Fi. Anything by Douglas Adams, Isaac Asimov, or any of the greats is fine with me!

I’m currently reading through Dan Simmons’s Hyperion and that’s been a heck of a ride. And podcasts GALORE, animation will having you devouring long-form content till the cows come home.

Musically, I’m a big fan of weird prog stuff like Primus and King Crimson. The weirder the better.
