Today we’d like to introduce you to Regina Burhop.
Hi Regina, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My photography journey really started with a love for capturing memories. Growing up, my dad was always the one taking pictures, and after losing him, those photographs became even more meaningful to me. They showed me just how powerful a photo can be—it can bring you right back to a person, a moment, or a feeling you never want to forget.
That love eventually grew into Regina Burhop Photography. I started small, learning as I went, building my confidence behind the camera, and figuring out what kind of photographer I wanted to be. Over time, I began photographing families, seniors, couples, weddings, sports, and special milestones, and every session helped me grow both creatively and professionally.
I’m still learning and growing every day, but I’m proud of how far I’ve come. What started as simply loving photographs has turned into a business that allows me to give other people something I value so deeply myself—memories they can hold onto long after the moment has passed. For me, photography has never just been about taking a pretty picture; it’s about preserving pieces of people’s stories.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t always been a smooth road, but I think that’s been an important part of the journey. One of my biggest struggles in the beginning was figuring out who my clientele was and what direction I wanted my photography to take. It took time, trial and error, and a lot of different sessions to really understand the type of work I loved creating and the clients I wanted to serve.
Another huge learning curve has been figuring out how to be a business owner. Photography is so much more than just taking pictures! I’ve had to learn about pricing, contracts, scheduling, marketing, communicating with clients, setting boundaries, and understanding the value of my own work—all while continuing to improve behind the camera.
There have definitely been moments of doubt and plenty of lessons learned along the way, but each challenge has helped shape my business into what it is today. I’m still learning, growing, and figuring things out as I go, and I think that’s part of what makes the journey so rewarding.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
At Regina Burhop Photography, I photograph a little bit of everything—from families and couples to weddings, sports, and special milestones—but senior photography has become one of the areas I’m especially passionate about. I love giving seniors an experience that feels like them, whether that means incorporating sports, their future college, a favorite location, or simply capturing their personality during such an exciting season of their life.
One thing I really want my business to be known for is creating beautiful, meaningful photographs while still being affordable and approachable. I believe everyone deserves to have important moments documented, and I never want someone to feel like professional photography is completely out of reach for them.
What sets me apart is the personal connection I try to create with my clients. I don’t want sessions to feel overly posed, uncomfortable, or like you’re just another name on my calendar. I want people to relax, have fun, and walk away with photographs that genuinely feel like them.
I’m especially proud of how much my business has grown and of the relationships I’ve built along the way. Seeing clients come back, recommend me to others, or trust me to photograph another milestone means so much to me. Knowing that I’m creating photographs that may someday hold the same sentimental value for someone that my own family photographs hold for me is probably the part of this work that I’m most proud of.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
My biggest advice is to just start. You don’t need the most expensive camera, the perfect website, or to have everything figured out before you begin. So much of photography—and running a business—is something you learn by actually doing it.
I also wish I had known earlier not to compare my beginning to someone else’s years of experience. It’s so easy to look at other photographers and question whether your work is good enough, but everyone develops their own style and grows at their own pace.
On the business side, learn your worth, set boundaries, and have contracts and policies in place from the beginning. You can love what you do and still treat it like a business. Not every client will be your ideal client, and that’s okay.
Most importantly, don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Some of my biggest lessons have come from things that didn’t go exactly as planned. Keep practicing, keep learning, take the opportunities that scare you a little, and remember why you picked up the camera in the first place.
