Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey into pet grooming wasn’t something I had planned—it started with an unexpected opportunity. When I was 19, I was preparing to deploy to Afghanistan with the 131st Transportation Company. Before we left, a representative visited our unit to talk about free educational opportunities available to us. One of those programs was dog grooming, and on a whim, I decided to enroll.
When I returned home from deployment in 2012, I began grooming dogs and quickly realized I had found something I genuinely loved. What started as a course became a career and eventually led me to open my own grooming business in February 2023.
Since then, it’s been an incredible journey. With the support of my son, Logan and my three-legged poodle, Toothless—who has become a big part of our story—we’ve been making our mark in the grooming community. Building a business has been exciting, stressful, and full of lessons, but above all, it’s been incredibly rewarding. Looking back at how it all began and seeing where we are today, I couldn’t be prouder of what we’ve built and what the future holds.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Of course not! Building a business is never a completely smooth road. I still proudly serve in the National Guard, so balancing military service with running a business requires a lot of flexibility and time management. On top of that, I’m a single mom, so like many parents, I’m constantly juggling responsibilities and doing my best to be present for both my family and my business.
One of the biggest challenges has been learning how to run a business. Just when I think I’ve figured something out, a new challenge comes along that pushes me to learn even more. From managing finances and marketing to customer service and scheduling, there’s always something new to navigate.
Choosing self-employment takes a lot of confidence and faith in yourself. There have definitely been moments when it’s been scary, but every obstacle has helped me grow—not just as a business owner, but as a person. Looking back, I know every challenge has been worth it because it’s helped build the business I’m so proud of today.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Over the years, I’ve become known for working with dogs that are considered difficult, anxious, or even aggressive. It’s incredibly rewarding to earn the trust of a dog that has been turned away from other grooming salons. Even more rewarding is seeing the relief on a pet parent’s face when they realize their beloved pet can be groomed safely and leaves looking and feeling their best.
I also take a lot of pride in the quality and consistency of my work. I hold myself to a very high standard, and every pet that leaves my shop is groomed with the same level of care and attention to detail that I would want for my own animals.
One thing that sets me apart is that I enjoy adding a little creativity when the opportunity arises. I occasionally do creative grooming with pet-safe hair dye, often featuring my three-legged poodle, Toothless, as my colorful model. It’s a fun way to showcase my artistic side while bringing smiles to people in the community.
I’m also happy to care for more than just dogs and cats. Over the years, I’ve groomed rabbits, guinea pigs, and even trimmed the nails of a bearded dragon. I truly love animals of all kinds, and I believe every pet deserves to be treated with patience, compassion, and the highest quality of care.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I think being a business owner means accepting that there’s always some level of risk. Every day I unlock the shop, I’m taking one. I have a home to provide for, bills to pay, employees who depend on me for a paycheck, and clients who trust me with their beloved pets. That’s a responsibility I don’t take lightly.
The biggest risk I ever took was leaving the security of a steady paycheck to build something of my own. There are no guarantees in entrepreneurship, and there are definitely moments of uncertainty. But I’ve learned that calculated risks are often where the greatest opportunities are found.
For me, risk isn’t about being fearless—it’s about believing in yourself enough to keep moving forward, even when the outcome isn’t certain. Every challenge has helped me grow, and every success has reminded me why taking that leap was worth it.
