Today we’d like to introduce you to Tory Gates.
Hi Tory, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I feel like my career and life have been a long series of journeys. My initial goals were pretty simple, but over the years, new opportunities arose, and my creativity got the chance to be used in many other areas.
I never thought I would have a career of more than 40 years in radio, and still be in the business. I never thought I’d get a chance to work in certain areas of the business, never get a chance to act, to write, etc.
The trip doesn’t end when you get older, and I don’t think it should ever.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No.
There’s a long learning process in every undertaking. Almost no one just tries something, and does it well. My radio career was years of small markets, jobs no one wants, tasks no one else would do. But over time you gain skills and experience.
The same thing with my writing. You may have written all your life, but you really don’t know what you are up against. Your skills need to be augmented, added to, and you get fresh ideas…putting them into action is not as simple as it seems.
Again, it’s all in the steps of the full journey, but don’t get ahead of yourself.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Radio: 42 years (so far), currently a reporter and anchor for NBC News Radio. Journalism and production are what I’m primarily known for, and I’ve adapted those skills to the publishing industry.
Writing: all my life I have but I have eight books published, seven with Sunbury Press Books. I also produce podcasts for our BookSpeak Network, and host two of them.
How do you think about luck?
There’s been both. There are times when you are in the (right/wrong) place at the (right/wrong) time. Ownership changes, business direction changes, new management (likes/doesn’t like) you, and the economy.
You can make your own luck as well. It has to do with how you work, how you perform, but also you trip yourself up. Your attitude can make or break you, but you can still have one and be yourself.
