Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Johnston.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started my business, Salt and Light Web Design, my first semester of my junior year of college. My plan was to use it as a way to get work experience prior to graduation and help pay off my loans. However, after I graduated and did some work in the digital marketing field and for other web designers, I knew that running my business was what I wanted to do.
I began pursuing my business full time back in 2022 and have loved every second of it. Over the years, I have expanded my services, worked with amazing clients, and developed a love for working with small businesses.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Overall, my journey has been a smooth one, but like any business, it took a lot of time, hard work, and dedication to get my business where it is today. Some of the challenges I faced were related to starting my business so young – I was 20 when I started it in college. The industry is very competitive, and starting a business without years of experience was a big risk and took me a while to get established.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in website design, but I also provide various digital marketing services to help best service my clients. This includes social media management, blogging, search engine optimization, content creation, branding, and print marketing.
I am known for creating websites that are uniquely designed for my clients and their business goals to help them establish a thriving online presence. I am humbled to have the opportunity to work closely with my clients and truly form relationships with them that go beyond a project. With any business, but especially small businesses, there is a passion that is behind everything they do, and I make it my goal to understand their hearts for their businesses. My family owns a small business, and I’ve always had a heart for the stories behind what makes them unique.
I believe that this sets me apart from competitors because it’s never been about websites. For me, it’s about that client-designer relationship and how it allows me to create websites that stand out because they reflect the heart of the business. Your business isn’t the same as everyone else’s, so why would I try to fit it into a template that dozens of other businesses use?
What are your plans for the future?
I had the opportunity to host an intern this summer and I have loved every second of it. I am hoping to provide more opportunities for interns in the future and would love to help them learn more about the industry, owning a business, and design as a whole.
