Hi Zachary, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Art has always been the thread connecting every part of my life. What started as a kid filling sketchbooks has grown into a career I never could have imagined. Today, I’m fortunate to spend my days in two worlds I love. During the school year, I teach high school art, helping students discover their own creative voices. Outside the classroom, I’m painting murals, creating live artwork at community events, and working with families and organizations to tell their stories through art.
Becoming a father changed the way I see the world and the way I create. My wife and our two kids remind me every day to stay curious, slow down, and appreciate the little moments. They inspire me just as much as any landscape or city skyline ever could.
Whether I’m standing in front of a classroom, painting a mural on the side of a building, or creating a piece for a local fundraiser, my goal is always the same. I want my work to make people feel something. I want it to celebrate the places we call home, the people who shape our communities, and the stories that deserve to be remembered.
Looking back, I’m grateful for every opportunity that’s come my way. Every mural, every student, every conversation has led me to the next chapter. I still get just as excited staring at a blank wall or a fresh canvas as I did when I first picked up a paintbrush. To me, that’s what this journey has always been about.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. One of the biggest challenges has been learning how to balance all the roles I care deeply about. I’m a working artist, a high school art teacher, entering my third season coaching boys and girls high school tennis, a husband, and a father. Every one of those roles demands time and energy, but they’ve also made me a better person and a better artist.
Building a career in art comes with uncertainty. Learning how to paint is one thing. Learning how to run a business, market yourself, manage clients, and stay creative while making a living is another challenge entirely. There were plenty of moments where I wondered if it would all work out, but I just kept showing up, putting in the work, and trusting the process.
Teaching and coaching have become just as much a part of my identity as painting. Every day I’m surrounded by young people who remind me to stay curious, keep learning, and embrace challenges. Whether I’m helping a student find their artistic voice, coaching an athlete through a tough match, or painting a mural that tells a community’s story, it’s all rooted in the same idea: helping people grow and connect.
Above all, becoming a husband and father has given me the greatest perspective. My family keeps me grounded and reminds me why I create in the first place. At the end of the day, I hope my artwork leaves people with a sense of joy, connection, and pride in the places they call home. If my kids grow up knowing that it’s possible to build a life around creativity, hard work, and serving others, then I’ll feel like I’ve done something worthwhile.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in large-scale murals, live event painting, and community-driven artwork that tells the stories of the people and places around us. Whether I’m transforming a public space, creating a painting during a charity event, or working on a private commission, I want every piece to have a sense of purpose and connection.
Much of my work is inspired by Western Pennsylvania. I love weaving together local history, nature, landmarks, and personal memories into colorful, layered compositions that encourage people to slow down and look a little closer. I hope my paintings spark conversations, preserve stories, and create a sense of pride for the communities they represent.
I’m also incredibly proud that my career extends beyond the studio. As a high school art teacher, I get to help students discover their own creativity every day. Teaching constantly pushes me to grow as an artist, and my experiences as a working artist give my students a real-world perspective on what a creative career can look like.
One of the things that means the most to me is using art to give back. Over the years I’ve had the privilege of creating live paintings and donating artwork for organizations that make a real difference in people’s lives. Seeing a painting raise money for a cause or become a permanent part of a community is every bit as rewarding as finishing the artwork itself.
If there’s one thing that sets my work apart, I hope it’s that every project begins with listening. I want the people, history, and character of a place to shape the artwork just as much as my own style. At the end of the day, I don’t just want to create paintings that people admire. I want to create artwork that people feel connected to.
What’s next?
As exciting as this chapter has been, I feel like I’m just getting started. I hope to continue creating public art that tells the stories of the communities I love while inspiring the next generation through teaching. There are so many walls still waiting to be painted and so many stories still waiting to be told. I also hope to continue growing as an educator, a coach, and a father, because each of those roles has made me a better artist.
One unexpected passion that’s shaped this next chapter of my life is fishing. When my daughter was born, I was looking for a hobby that would get me outdoors, slow life down a bit, and become something we could eventually share together. I had no idea it would grow into such a big part of who I am. Today, both my daughter and my son come fishing with me every chance they get, and watching them discover the outdoors has become just as rewarding as catching fish myself. There’s something special about being a beginner again. Learning new techniques, understanding fish behavior, and spending quiet mornings on the water reminded me what it feels like to fall in love with learning all over again. That excitement has become something I now get to pass along to my kids.
Naturally, that passion has found its way into my artwork. I’ve started developing a body of paintings inspired by fishing, rivers, and the outdoors. It has challenged me creatively and opened the door to exploring subjects I never imagined painting just a few years ago. It’s a reminder that the best artists never stop learning, and I hope that curiosity continues to shape my work for years to come.
Looking ahead, my biggest goal is simply to keep growing. I want to continue creating meaningful art that brings people together, mentoring students in the classroom, coaching young athletes, and making memories with my family. If I can leave my kids with a love for creativity, the outdoors, and the confidence to chase whatever inspires them, I’ll feel like I’ve done something worthwhile.
