Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Morgan.
Hi Kelly, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Kelly Morgan — a 54-year-old bodybuilder, U.S. Air Force veteran, registered nurse, mother of two, and fierce advocate for sustainable fitness — is the powerhouse behind MorGainz Fitness.
As the founder and owner of this multi-location brand, Kelly leads operations, drives expansion across southwestern Pennsylvania, and still carves out time to train and mentor members personally.
After four years of active duty in the U.S. Air Force, Kelly became a nurse, earned her undergraduate degree, and raised a family — before diving headfirst into entrepreneurship. Frustrated by the lack of high-quality training facilities in her hometown of Johnstown, PA, she set out to create something different: a gym rooted in science, nutrition, and no-BS accountability.
In 2012, she launched the flagship MorGainz Fitness — a 10,000-square-foot facility in Richland Township. A movement was born.
Today, MorGainz offers 24/7 access, cutting-edge equipment, expert coaching, body composition analysis, and the Ignite90 program — Kelly’s signature, science-based transformation system built on heavy lifting, macro tracking, and grit. With thousands of success stories and counting, MorGainz has grown into a regionally recognized fitness community built on one promise: You Leave Better.
Whether she’s competing on a bodybuilding stage, working with the Johnstown Tomahawks hockey team, teaching classes, mentoring clients 1-on-1 or virtually, or instructing at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown — Kelly brings presence, purpose, and passion to everything she does. She proudly supports her community, she’s very involved in 8 different networking groups, and is a sponsor of Wendy Bell Radio.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Morgan relates to the legendary Rocky Balboa, also (fictionally) from Pennsylvania, as the character connects to aspects of her own life. “Rocky represents exactly what I’ve built. Not the biggest, not the flashiest, not backed by a giant corporation, gets underestimated, keeps showing up, wins through grit, heart, community, and relentless work.” She has faced her own serious loss, such as her husband of 25 years passing away in 2022, but just like Rocky, Morgan keeps moving forward. “The number of times I’ve been knocked down and got back up to fight and get hit again is probably countless.”
Oh my goodness, there are so many obstacles… Picking the wrong equipment, trusting the wrong people, Covid, planet fitness comes into town, my husband dies, betrayals from past employees who open their own facilities. My goodness I could go on for days!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Well, I started out as an Air Force veteran in the medical field… I excel up to receive my LVN certificate and eventually my RN with a bachelors. I jumped into entrepreneurialism in 2012 and built a new gym pretty much every 2 1/2 years. Until there were four. I’m so proud of never giving up… Never surrender! All that time, money, energy effort, blood sweat and tears was worth it. You cannot beat someone who won’t quit. I think that’s where grit and resilience also comes from… From refusing to stay down when you get knocked down. I have tenacity, authenticity, drive and passion to help others become the best versions of themselves through fitness. I also have been in business for over 14 years.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
Fitness is always trendy… But the basics stay the same…you have to do resistance training to grow muscles and increase your bone density. The GLP one nightmare has certainly affected people’s health…sometimes up to 50% of the weight loss is lean mass and that is a terrible idea. But ultimately, I see more and more people understanding that resistance training is the answer… The fountain of youth. You have to put the work in. I’m also seeing a lot more females getting into it, which is awesome.
As for the future of MorGainz… I have had plenty of requests for additional locations in other towns nearby including Pittsburgh suburbs. I am looking for potential partners to see if we could make it work. It would be cool to have one of the only female owned gym chains. So… You never know where another one might just pop up! I also love learning as well as teaching….pouring into the next generation!!!!
