Hidden Gems: Meet Abel of Abruzzi Pizza in Brookhaven

Today we’d like to introduce you to Abel.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I immigrated to the United States from Mexico in 1999. My very first job was at a pizza shop, and I ended up working there for more than 15 years. Throughout that time, I always dreamed of one day owning my own pizza restaurant.

After leaving that job, I worked in a variety of restaurants, learning every aspect of the business—from food preparation and customer service to operations and management. Over the years, I gained the knowledge and experience needed to run a successful restaurant.

Eventually, I felt confident enough to take the leap. With the support and hard work of my wife, we were able to make that dream a reality by purchasing Abruzzi Pizza in Brookhaven.

It has been a rewarding experience, we love to interact with our customers. We want to make everyone feel welcome and comfortable, really just building relationships in our community, so we treat our customers and our team like one big family. Most importantly, we also continue to focus on making the highest quality product that people have come to enjoy.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
One of the biggest obstacles my wife and I faced, and the reason we couldn’t own a pizza restaurant sooner was simply not having enough capital. We spent years working, saving, and preparing ourselves for the opportunity. Another challenge was finding the right location. We knew that where a restaurant is located can have a huge impact on its success, so we didn’t want to rush into just any opportunity. We waited until we found a place that felt right for our family and our future. When Abruzzi Pizza in Brookhaven became available, we saw the chance to turn a lifelong dream into reality and create something we could be proud of for years to come.

We’ve been impressed with Abruzzi Pizza in Brookhaven, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
At Abruzzi Pizza Brookhaven, we still do things the old-fashioned way. Our stone-oven pizza is made using the same recipe that has been a customer favorite for over 20 years. We hand-roll our dough, make our pizza sauce in-house, and use Grande cheese to ensure every pizza meets the standard our customers expect. While pizza is our specialty, we offer something for everyone. Our menu includes cheesesteaks & chicken cheesesteaks, burgers, fresh salads, wings, lasagna, meatballs, stuffed shells, and many other favorites. Whether customers stop in for a quick lunch, a family dinner, or a pizza night with friends, our goal is to provide great food, friendly service, and a welcoming atmosphere that keeps people coming back.

What matters most to you?
It is important to keep growing and expanding the business so we can continue providing jobs for people and making a positive impact on our local community. We’d love to be a place people remember years from now, a restaurant where families celebrate birthdays, friends catch up over pizza, and parents bring their kids after a ball game. Seeing familiar faces walk through our doors and knowing we’ve become a small part of people’s lives is what makes all the hard work worthwhile. We appreciate everyone who has supported us, and we look forward to serving our community for years to come.
