Today we’d like to introduce you to Meenal Samant.
Hi Meenal, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Looking back, I realize my love for visual storytelling began long before I ever picked up a camera.
Some of my earliest memories are of accompanying my father to printing presses. My father and grandfather were both in the printing business, and I remember the smell of ink, stacks of paper, the heat from the running machines, large printing plates, and freshly printed sheets waiting to be cut. At the time, I probably didn’t realize it, but those experiences sparked my interest in colors, design, and visual creativity.
I later earned a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, but I never felt the same excitement working with numbers that I did when I was doing something creative. Whether it was nature, design, or photography, I always found myself drawn to visual arts.
My husband encouraged me to learn graphic design, and that became an important creative outlet for me. I am completely self-taught in graphic design, and over the years I worked on a variety of projects, including brochures, publications, and community event materials. Those experiences taught me a great deal about visual communication and design.
Photography was always something I enjoyed, especially while traveling with my family. While visiting Venice, I took a photograph with my Nikon DSLR of an orange biscotti that I was holding in my hand. The biscotti was in sharp focus, and the background had a beautiful blur. When I saw that image later, it was one of the first times I thought, “Maybe I can actually create beautiful photographs.” Looking back, that was probably when photography started becoming something more than just a hobby for me.
A few years later, my sister encouraged me to take photography more seriously and start building a portfolio. She even volunteered to model for me along with her dog, Lily. I approached that session determined to do my very best, and seeing the results gave me the confidence to keep moving forward.
My sister also suggested the name Magnolia Designs. I chose it immediately. Over time, the name has come to mean even more to me because the fragrance of magnolia flowers reminds me of my childhood in Mumbai.
Today, Magnolia Designs focuses primarily on portrait and food photography. I enjoy working with families to preserve meaningful memories and helping small businesses create imagery that tells their story. What I enjoy most is meeting people, learning something new every day, and creating images that bring joy to others.
Looking back, my path from printing presses to graphic design to photography feels very natural. The tools have changed over the years, but the love of creating and telling stories visually has always been there.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I wouldn’t describe it as a particularly difficult road, and I feel fortunate for that. I have had a very supportive family, which has made a big difference throughout my creative journey.
That doesn’t mean there haven’t been challenges. Like many creatives, I have experienced moments of self-doubt. There were times when I questioned whether I was good enough or whether I could achieve the results I envisioned. But I never seriously thought about stopping. Instead, I would ask myself what I could learn, improve, or try differently.
Since both graphic design and photography are self-taught, a big part of the journey has been learning through practice, experimentation, and making mistakes. Even today, I continue to learn something new all the time.
Photography also teaches you that things don’t always go according to plan. Weather changes, lighting conditions shift, and sometimes the image you imagined in your mind doesn’t immediately translate into reality. Learning how to adapt in those situations has been one of the most valuable lessons.
As an outdoor portrait photographer, the winter months can be slower, but I have come to see that as an opportunity rather than a setback. Over the past few months, I have been exploring food photography, which has been both exciting and creatively fulfilling. As someone who loves food, I enjoy playing with colors, styling, and presentation, and it has opened up a completely new area of learning for me.
Looking back, the challenges have been less about overcoming major obstacles and more about continuing to grow, adapt, and stay curious.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Today, Magnolia Designs focuses primarily on portrait and food photography. I enjoy working with families to preserve meaningful memories and with small businesses to create imagery that helps tell their story.
While portrait and food photography may seem very different, what I enjoy most about both is the opportunity to create something meaningful. Whether I am photographing a family, a graduate, a newborn, or a local business, I want the images to reflect the people and stories behind them.
One of the greatest compliments I can receive is when a family tells me that the photographs will be treasured for years to come. To me, that is when a photograph becomes more than just an image. It becomes part of a family’s story and something they can look back on years later.
I am also proud of how much I have grown over the years. Much of my journey has been about learning, practicing, making mistakes, and continuing to improve. I still enjoy learning something new every day.
What sets me apart is probably my background in both design and photography, along with a genuine love of learning. I enjoy studying other artists, exploring new techniques, and finding ways to grow creatively. There is always something new to learn, and that curiosity continues to inspire me.
At the end of the day, I simply enjoy meeting people, creating meaningful images, and knowing that something I created may bring joy to someone for years to come.
What does success mean to you?
For me, success is waking up each day excited to learn, create, and do work that I genuinely enjoy.
I feel successful when I create something meaningful, whether it’s a photograph that becomes part of a family’s memories or an image that helps a small business tell its story.
I also believe success is having the opportunity to keep learning. There is always a new skill to develop, a new idea to explore, or a different perspective to understand. That curiosity keeps me motivated and excited about what comes next.
At the end of the day, success for me is being proud of the person I am becoming, enjoying the work I do, and making a positive difference, however small, in the lives of others.
