Life & Work with Charles And Susie Andrews of National

Today we’d like to introduce you to Charles And Susie Andrews.

Hi Charles and Susie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
The Garden Gallery
Established in 1976, The Garden Gallery, owned and operated by Charles and Susie Andrews, is Central Pennsylvania’s oldest and largest fine arts gallery.

The Gallery represents a diverse collection of original art and objects ranging from vintage to contemporary, and from the curious to the divine. Featured artists include distinguished Pennsylvania historical artists such as Ira J. Deen and Esther M. Groome, as well as nationally recognized talents including Jamie Wyeth, Frank Gallo, and Patrick Nagel. Outstanding local artists represented by the Gallery include David Reinbold, Phill Selzer, Susie Stamm Andrews, and James Krabiel.

In addition to fine art, The Garden Gallery offers unique and original décor pieces spanning vintage, Mid-Century Modern, and contemporary styles. Among these are vintage and historic cameras, from the age of film photography to the beginnings of digital imaging. While many of these cameras remain functional, today they primarily serve as remarkable examples of 19th and 20th century industrial design and technology — the high-tech innovations of their time.

Custom Framing
The Gallery also offers a range of professional services beginning with fine custom framing.
The most important aspect of custom framing is creating a design that serves the artwork or object itself. Framing design should be objective rather than subjective, while still considering both the customer’s style and the character of the piece. Our goal is to design and fabricate a showcase that best presents and protects the cherished object it contains.
All custom framing is archivally responsible and uses best practices and conservation-quality materials, including acid-free matting and mountings, along with UV-filtering glass. We provide framing solutions that not only enhance the aesthetics of each piece, but also preserve it for generations to come.

Art Restoration
Since 1976, we have restored and refurbished paintings, drawings, sculptures, ceramics, and glass objects. Our goal is not simply to repair or clean an object, but to prepare it for the future by addressing structural and organic issues such as mold, sagging canvas, insect damage, and improper past repairs.

Photo Restoration
Since 2001, The Garden Gallery has offered professional photo restoration services.
Modern digital restoration techniques can produce extraordinary results thanks to advances in scanning technology and restoration software, all in the hands of a skilled artist. In the past, photographs, prints, and documents had to be restored manually — a painstaking, expensive, and labor-intensive process that often produced limited results.
Today, the process begins by scanning the original image to create a high-quality digital file. A duplicate of that file is restored and saved as the final image from which restored prints can be produced. The final digital image is then returned to the customer, allowing future copies to be made in different sizes and easily shared with family and friends. In essence, the image can now be preserved indefinitely.
