Today we’d like to introduce you to Derrick & Warren Clark.
Hi Derrick & Warren, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Belleville Market was born from a shared belief that retail could be something more than a transaction. Warren and I have always been drawn to the idea of creating places that bring people together, and we saw an opportunity to reimagine what a local retail experience could look like.
Our journey to Easton wasn’t a direct one. We moved to the Lehigh Valley from Austin, Texas more than a decade ago and spent years getting to know the region, its communities, and its unique character. About three years ago, we finally landed in Easton and immediately felt a connection to the city’s energy, creativity, and strong sense of community. It felt like the perfect place to put down roots and bring our vision to life.
Before launching Belleville, we each brought different but complementary experiences to the table. Warren spent much of his career in retail leadership, developing expertise in store operations, merchandising, and customer experience. My background included retail as well, but also entrepreneurship, business development, marketing, and working with independent businesses. Together, those experiences gave us a unique perspective on both what shoppers are looking for and what small business owners need to succeed.
Over the years, we saw firsthand how powerful retail can be when it’s done well. The best stores aren’t just places to buy things—they become gathering places, create lasting memories, and help build stronger communities. Those experiences shaped our belief that brick-and-mortar retail still has an important role to play, especially when it’s centered around people, discovery, and connection.
What started as a vision for a curated marketplace has grown into Belleville Market, a modern neighborhood department store in the heart of downtown Easton. We wanted to create a place where independent merchants, makers, and brands could thrive together under one roof, while giving shoppers a unique and welcoming experience that felt both familiar and new. Inspired by the neighborhood department stores of the past, we set out to build a business centered on discovery, hospitality, and community.
Over the years, Belleville has evolved alongside the merchants and customers who have helped shape it. Today, the market is home to a carefully curated collection of businesses offering everything from home décor and gifts to apparel, furniture, specialty foods, and everyday essentials. What makes it special is not just the products, but the stories behind them and the people who bring them to life.
As we’ve grown, we’ve expanded that mission beyond the walls of the market through initiatives like Belleville Street Faire, which celebrates independent businesses and makers in an outdoor festival setting. We’ve also begun sharing what we’ve learned with other entrepreneurs and market operators through Belleville Trade. While these ventures have become important parts of our work, everything traces back to the same goal: creating opportunities for small businesses to succeed and building places where communities can gather, connect, and discover something new.
Looking back, the journey has been full of challenges, lessons, and unexpected opportunities. What continues to motivate us is seeing merchants grow their businesses, watching customers discover a new favorite maker, and knowing that Belleville has become a meaningful part of the Easton community. We’re proud of how far we’ve come, but we’re even more excited about what’s ahead.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but we wouldn’t have it any other way. Building any business comes with challenges, and creating a concept that’s a little different from what’s traditionally out there brings its own unique hurdles.
Before opening Belleville Market in Easton, we owned and operated a retail furniture and home décor business in Bethlehem. That experience taught us a tremendous amount about retail, customer service, merchandising, and the realities of running a small business. It also helped shape many of the ideas that would eventually become Belleville. While that chapter was successful in many ways, it also reinforced how important it is to continually evolve, adapt, and be willing to rethink what the future could look like.
One of the biggest challenges with Belleville has been helping people understand exactly what it is. We’re not a traditional department store, but we’re also not a flea market, antique mall, or typical gift shop. From the beginning, we’ve been building something that combines retail, hospitality, and opportunities for independent businesses. Sometimes that means taking extra time to communicate the vision to customers, merchants, and even ourselves as the business continues to grow and evolve.
Like many entrepreneurs, we’ve also faced the challenges that come with growth. Every new opportunity creates new questions about systems, staffing, operations, and how to scale while staying true to the original vision. We’ve learned that growth isn’t just about getting bigger, but it’s also about building a stronger foundation and creating an experience that consistently delivers for both customers and merchants.
Another challenge has been balancing the needs of many different stakeholders. We want to create an exceptional experience for our customers while also helping our merchants succeed. Because our success is tied to the success of the businesses within Belleville, we’re constantly looking for ways to support them, promote them, and create opportunities for them to grow.
At the end of the day, many of our biggest challenges have also become our greatest lessons. We’ve learned to be adaptable, to listen closely to our community, and to embrace change when necessary. Looking back, we wouldn’t describe the journey as easy, but we would absolutely describe it as rewarding. Seeing merchants grow their businesses, watching customers make Belleville part of their routine, and becoming part of the fabric of the Easton community has made every challenge worth it.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Belleville Market is a modern neighborhood department store located in downtown Easton, Pennsylvania. At its core, we’re a curated retail destination that brings together independent merchants, makers, and brands under one roof to create a shopping experience centered around discovery, community, and hospitality.
One of the things that sets us apart is that we’re not built around a single product category or brand. Instead, we’ve created a collection of thoughtfully curated departments that offer everything from home décor, furniture, gifts, apparel, bath and body products, specialty foods, and everyday essentials. We love creating a place where someone can come in looking for one thing and leave having discovered something completely unexpected.
We’re also deeply committed to thoughtful curation. While many of the merchants within Belleville are local entrepreneurs, makers, and growing independent brands, we don’t believe customers should have to choose between shopping local and finding exceptional products from around the world. Alongside local businesses, guests will discover nationally and internationally recognized brands that have earned a reputation for quality, design, and craftsmanship. Whether it’s a locally made gift, a handcrafted piece of furniture, or an iconic brand like SMEG, our goal is to create a shopping experience that feels curated, elevated, and full of discovery.
That balance is one of the things that sets Belleville apart. We bring together local businesses, independent makers, and established brands in a way that feels cohesive and intentional, giving customers access to products and experiences they might not expect to find in one place.
If there’s one thing we’re known for, it’s creating an experience that feels both nostalgic and fresh at the same time. We often describe Belleville as a modern interpretation of the neighborhood department store—a place where people can shop across multiple categories, discover new favorites, connect with local businesses, and feel genuinely welcomed when they walk through the door.
What we’re most proud of is the community that has formed around the business. While we’re proud of the products, displays, and physical space we’ve created, the real success of Belleville is the people behind it. It’s the merchants who have grown their businesses here, the team members who create memorable experiences for our guests, and the customers who continue to support independent businesses and make Belleville part of their lives.
As we’ve grown, we’ve expanded that mission through initiatives like Belleville Street Faire and Belleville Trade, but everything we do comes back to the same purpose: helping independent businesses thrive while creating meaningful places for people to gather, shop, and connect.
If there’s one thing we’d want readers to know, it’s that Belleville is more than a store. It’s a community built around the idea that great retail experiences still matter, independent businesses deserve opportunities to grow, and thoughtful curation can bring together products, people, and stories from near and far in a way that creates something truly special.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
One of the things we love most about Easton is its incredible history and sense of place. As people who are passionate about retail, we’re especially fascinated by the city’s retail heritage. There was a time when Northampton Street and Centre Square were lined with department stores and bustling with shoppers. Downtown Easton was a true shopping destination, where people came not only to buy what they needed but to experience the energy of the city itself. That history is part of what inspired our vision for Belleville Market. We love the idea of bringing a modern interpretation of that experience back to downtown. Historical accounts and photographs from the mid-20th century show Northampton Street thriving with major department stores before the rise of suburban malls, and that legacy is still part of Easton’s story today.
Beyond its history, what makes Easton special is its authenticity. The city has managed to preserve its character while continuing to evolve. There’s a strong entrepreneurial spirit here, an incredible arts and cultural community, and a genuine sense of collaboration among local businesses. We regularly see business owners supporting one another because everyone understands that a stronger downtown benefits the entire community.
If we had to identify a challenge, it would simply be making sure that future growth continues to preserve the character that makes Easton unique. The city’s history, architecture, independent businesses, and sense of community are what make it special. As Easton continues to grow and attract new investment, we hope those qualities remain at the center of its future.
Overall, we’re incredibly grateful to be part of Easton. It’s a city with a rich past, exciting momentum, and a community that genuinely cares about its future. As business owners, that’s the kind of place you hope to find.
