Today we’d like to introduce you to Caterina Buehler.
Hi Caterina, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Growing up – I wasn’t sure what I wanted to be. Even after highschool I felt a little lost! I went to college for a business marketing degree because I did enjoy the digital space, that was one thing I felt sure of. After being in college for a bit, I started marketing myself through a blog. I would get PR and have to create content. During that phase, I felt like I could upgrade my content by shooting with a professional camera and somehow one thing led to another and I was shooting weddings straight after graduation. I never looked back! While the market is always changing and growing and adapting, I feel like that is what makes this industry so exciting. It’s always fresh. Always welcoming creativity and I still get to use my degree! Weddings have become essential to even my well being. The interactions, the clients, the experiences that I have gotten to accumulate over the years have shaped me into the person I am today.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Great question. Bumpy for sure. While the work never stopped coming my way, covid impacted our industry in a very interesting way. During covid of course – weddings ceased to exist in the way we know them traditionally. Instead of big celebrations, we opted for small intimate ceremonies, and many held off until after the regulations lifted to tie the knot. Which then led to a “wedding boom”. The wedding boom created this intense need for photographers and many started to pick up the camera then too! I technically started my business RIGHT before covid!
Adapting and understanding the market became essential for success. Adapting because that boom would eventually die down and it did! Covid weddings seemed to have been taken care of, and the economy has been a bit impactful to the industry as whole. Understanding my place in the market and pivoting when needed is why I am where I am today.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a wedding photographer! I find that I can intentionally weave in trends while still maintaining the focus on timeless wedding aesthetics. My brides always seem to gravitate to how my couples exude excitement in their photos, feel natural and still have so much creativity woven into their photos.
I am proud of where my business has led me today. Not only financially, but for the actual relationships and incredible clients that I get to document. So many weddings sit in my heart and so many interactions have propelled me into loving this space more and more. I find that my type B personality works really well to relax my clients and allow them to comfortable in their own skin in an otherwise uncomfortable setting. Being in front of the camera is never really a natural feeling unless you’re a model. My experience is incredibly relaxed while still maintaining that type A personality to whip that timeline into shape and keep the day flowing as seamlessly as possible.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
While I tend to shoot most in Philadelphia, I am actually from 2.5 hours away in Muncy, PA! I am close to Williamsport area. With that said, I don’t have many gripes about Philly as maybe I would if I lived there. Photographing weddings in Philly has been invigorating to say the least. There are so many beautiful/architecturally rich aspects to the city, so many unique venues and so much life. I love that no two weddings feel the same.
