Today we’d like to introduce you to Ventnor Wright.
Hi Ventnor, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was raised by my father, a minister/pastor, and my mother, a private home cleaner and organist. Being the youngest of three children, my parents took me all the community funerals. I remember being 8 years old and telling my mother that I wanted to be an “undertaker”. I was fascinated with the funerals I saw.
We after school, I enrolled in mortuary school, graduated with an Associates degree in mortuary science, served 18 months as an apprentice under a licensed funeral director, took the Pennsylvania state board of funeral directors exam, and was licensed in June of 1985.
Also in 1985 my first child, Stephanie, was born, but with severe brain damage due to oxygen to the brain. Five years later my marriage ended, my wife left and I was left as a single father. I stepped away from funeral service and became employed by the united states postal service. I served 25 years in the post office, first as a mailman, and then as a supervisor of mail delivery. During that time, I met my future wife, Leslie and we were married a year later. After being married 7 years, Leslie connected me to a funeral home that had been shut down by the state. We bought the building and started from scratch building it into what is now Wright Funeral & Cremation Services, Inc. Also during that time, my father passed away, and 60 days later, my daughter passed away at the age of 21. Eventually I buried my mother, as she passed during the covid pandemic, and also buried my two older brothers. I also lost my ability to talk clearly due to a vocal condition called spasmodic dysphonia. That lasted approximately 7 years, and after getting botox injections into my vocal chords I finally was able to speak again, but I never regained my ability to sing. I started singing as a young child and found it to be an escape/comfort.
So any way, to date, I’ve been licensed now almost 42 years, and have operated and owned a funeral home. I also wrote a book about the postal experience. I’m in the middle of writing another book, about the funeral business. But I will stop there as there is more to my life story.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about WRIGHT FUNERAL AND CREMATION SERVICES INC?
