Inspiring Conversations with Noah Carroll of InSight Therapy & Counseling Services LL

Today we’d like to introduce you to Noah Carroll.

Hi Noah, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I created InSight to fill a void in our modern healthcare system. While psychology and medicine have given us many powerful and effective tools, I have long believed that in our fast-paced world, we have lost touch with ourselves, with nature, and with each other. My eclectic approach to therapy focuses on healing mind, body and even society. I base the model on systems theory and the Person-in-Environment approach, and I understand that real healing requires attention to the body, the mind and the self within our culture/society.
As a therapist and an avid rock climber, with over twenty years of experience climbing and nearly fifteen years as a therapist, I understand the importance of the mind-body connection. Climbing is a profoundly challenging, and often frightening experience, just like life. I have learned that the skills gained through experiential processes, such as climbing, yoga, hiking, and minfulness practices, globalize well to daily life. This is a completely different approach to therapy and wellness.
My own life experiences really inform my approach to therapy. As someone with my own mental health history, as well as history of substance abuse and opioid addiction, my experiences as a client in the therapy space have shaped me as a provider. I had to reprocess my own traumas, to learn how to take care of myself, to maintain relationships. My road to wellness included the incorporation of an organice, whole foods driven diet, as well as mindfulness, physical exercise, and frequent experiences in nature.
This approach is far from “just talking,” as we practice truly experience driven therapies that promote real change. Our providers take a strengths based, client centered approach to treatment. The client as a person is at the heart of therapy; the focus on the mind within the person is a primary component of treatment.
The mind-body connection is real. Your mind and body are interconnected parts of the whole. They are dynamic and ever-changing. They effect one another in powerful and profound ways. At InSight, we believe that whole wellness and true healing come from work on both the mental and physical. Diet and nutritional balance, cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, sleep hygiene, and flexibility come together and are pillars of body wellbeing. Where the body leads, the mind will follow; and vice versa. At InSight, we understand the power of this connection, and the therapy we offer incorporates the health of the body as well as the mind.
My undergraduate degree is in Political Science, and I hold a Master’s in Social Service. As such, my understanding of our culture, society and socio-political system also informs my approach to therapy.
Therapy doesn’t happen in a vacuum. When you leave the therapy office, your wellness must follow. Life exists outside of the boundaries of the therapy office, and at InSight we understand that our clients are people living within a series of larger systems: work, friendships, family, social connections, culture and society at large all effect how we feel, what we think, and how we act. Treatment at InSight acknowledges this reality, and our providers focus on understanding our clients as people within the larger environment. When enough people truly work on their wellbeing, change and improvements can occur at the level of society. We understand this concept, and the role of the environment is always accounted for.
Overall, my approach to wellness and therapy draws from my own personal and professional experiences and emphasizes the importance of the mind-body-environment connection. By approaching the work from this perspective, I am able to truly help people heal and grow, well beyond the limits of traditional talk therapy.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My life’s road has not been smooth. In fact, I would describe it as deeply challenging and very rough. I spent the first 6 years of my professional life working in community mental health, deep in the “trenches” in Philadelphia. I intentionally chose to work with a highly at-risk and challenging population, among people with serious socioeconomic disadvantages, who lived among drug addiction, violence, and in poverty. My choice was to “give back” to this community. During my time working for Family Based as a Lead Clinician, leading a mobile 4-person team, I survived a driveby shooting, was witness to overdoses, frequently testified in Family Court, and served countless survivors of child abuse, sexual assault, rape, and violent crime.
During this time, I also experienced personal tragedy. I lost two cousins, both male and both close to me age; one died by suicide, and the other overdosed on Fentanyl.
My own substance abuse and opioid dependency history also inform my practice and the ways in which I provide therapy. I have been “clean” for nearly twenty years. However, in the depths of my addiction, I nearly died. These struggles and the ways in which I taught myself to live a clean and well life allow me to meet my clients where they are, with more empathy and understanding.

We’ve been impressed with InSight Therapy & Counseling Services LL, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
At InSight, we take a client-centered approach to therapy, meeting you where you are and building on the strengths and skills which you already have.
The programs we offer and the methods we follow focus on fostering healthy relationships, promoting mental health and grit, and encouraging personal growth.
InSight isn’t just a therapy center. We believe in the body-mind connection and we offer an approach rooted in wholeness and overall wellbeing.
I am trained in traditional approaches to psychotherapy, including CBT, EMDR, TF-CBT, systems, and psychodynamic modalities. However, these models are merely tools in my therapeutic toolbox.
True healing comes from a place of trust, mutual respect and compassion. Whole healing must address the mind, body and the culture in which we live. It is a journey. The path we take at InSight is experiential, driven by actual human experiences rather than typical clinical interventions and “bandages” such as “coping skills.” Our approach involves nature, the wilderness, the physical body, mindfulness, a healthy whole foods diet, and an adventure-driven approach to life and wellness.

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
As a child, I was invested in becoming a professional actor. Over the summer, I would attend theatre training camp, and I participated in many professional-level trainings. One summer, I was in a production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” with Natalie Portman. My theatre training has helped me tremendously in my therapy practice, as the ability to improvise and empathisize were built in these trainings.
