Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Schoener.
Hi Kayla, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been in the hair industry for over 20 years. Started out as an assistant and nail technician to full time stylist. I attended BCTC for Cosmetology while in high school where what started as a passion quickly turned into a career I truly love. Over the years, I’ve continued to invest in education and evolving my craft, specializing in lived-in color, blonding, and extensions.
Opening Wild Bloom Hair Studio was a dream of mine—to create a more personalized, one-on-one experience where clients feel comfortable, confident, and cared for. I wanted a space that reflected not just my style, but my values: connection, creativity, and quality. It’s aloud me to be the best version of me for my clients and family!
As a business owner and a mom, I’ve learned how to balance growth with intention. Every step of my journey has been about building something meaningful—for my clients, my family, and myself—and I’m proud of how far I’ve come while still being excited for what’s ahead.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been easy. Stepping out of your comfort zone is always scary. I was at my previous Salon for 17 years where I was comfortable had a great book of clients but just felt there was always something missing. Once I became a mother, I made the decision with my husband to take the leap into being my own boss. Which came with a lot of uncertainties of would my clients follow me? Would I be successful? Am I making a mistake. But if I have advice for anyone, it’s take the jump make yourself uncomfortable to get comfortable. Balancing work and family life was another challenge, especially as a mom. Learning how to set boundaries while still showing up fully for my clients took time. I also had to wear many hats—stylist, marketer, bookkeeper, and business owner—which pushed me out of my comfort zone.
Through all of it, I’ve grown not just professionally but personally. Each obstacle taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of believing in my vision even when it felt difficult.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I wouldn’t say I like to be called a “specialist”. I enjoy hair. I enjoy all parts of hair whether it’s curly cuts, blonding, reds, extensions or perms. I literally do it all. Hair is my passion and I continue to grow with education and learning the new trends and techniques. I recently won a local award for best hair extension studio as well as one of the top five salons and Wyomissing.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
I would say the most important lesson I’ve learned is to just believe in yourself. Always have a positive mindset and find the positive out of any negative situation. Take constructive criticism and learn. You’ll never get anywhere if you continue to doubt yourself.
