Today we’d like to introduce you to Rose Valley Chorus & Orchestra.
Hi Rose Valley Chorus & Orchestra, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Rose Valley Chorus & Orchestra (RVCO) started as part of the Rose Valley Arts & Craft movement. Beginning as residents getting together in neighbors’ homes, RVCO put on its first full stage production of Gilbert & Sullivan’s “The Mikado” in 1907. As one of the longest running Gilbert & Sullivan groups in the world, RVCO has performed these operettas multiple times. In 1960, the group began including other operettas (such as “The Merry Widow”) and Broadway musicals. RVCO originally performed in Artsman Hall, which is where Hedgerow Theater is now located, and has performed at many venue throughout the Delaware Valley. Currently, we perform at Strath Haven Middle School.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There are many struggles to deal with in Community Theater. One of our biggest has always been venue. We do not have a home performance space, but have performed at many venues throughout the Delaware Valley, mainly at schools. Not having a home means that we often have to balance our desires with the needs of the school. We work very hard to maintain positive relationships with the groups we partner with. When we change our venue, maintaining our audience becomes an issue. We need to work hard at keeping our audiences informed of where we are performing. Another issue is the wonderfully prolific community theaters in the region. There is a lot of competition to attract the best performers.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We perform fully staged musicals and operettas with a full orchestra, costumes, sets and lighting. We have dedicated people who want to bring the best productions to our audiences and we all work very hard to make this happen. We are a largely volunteer organization, so this is a huge accomplishment. One of the things that sets us apart in the current climate is that we perform with a full orchestra of 25-35 people, depending on the show. We are fortunate to have this resource available to us.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
Our performances are vibrant, robust and beautifully performed and we are proud to share our talents with the community. We have dedicated volunteers who build our sets, costume our actors and perform in such wonderful shows. Our current show is “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” and we are excited to bring this to the stage in April, 2026. More details can be found on our website at www.rvco.org, where you can see our production history, see auditions for upcoming shows, and put yourself on our mailing list.
