Today we’d like to introduce you to Tara Stoop.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Long before I launched my nonprofit, I was committed to performing random acts of kindness. I instilled this value in my children and now my grandchildren, ensuring it becomes a legacy of compassion. Throughout the years, I witnessed many individuals facing challenges—often trapped in a web of bureaucracy—unable to see the possibilities for improvement while in survival mode. I felt a strong calling to step in and make a difference, whether that meant providing groceries, gas, or even clothing for job interviews. These simple gestures can profoundly impact lives, often going unrecognized.
Social media wasn’t what it is today when I started this journey. I had a dear friend who often dreamed of winning the lottery, promising that if he ever did, we’d scale our efforts significantly. Unfortunately, he passed away, and I faced a crucial decision: to succumb to my grief or to honor his memory through action. This pivotal moment led me to establish Kindness Between Friends as a registered 501(c)(3) organization, with “between friends” symbolizing our bond.
Over the past decade, I am astounded by our growth and the number of lives we’ve touched. Our organization remains steadfast as a volunteer-driven initiative, relying solely on the generosity of community members and local businesses—opting not to accept any government funding. Together, we’ve assisted tens of thousands of individuals in our community, embodying the spirit of kindness we cherish.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The journey hasn’t always been smooth. One of our primary challenges has been funding. Our ability to assist those in need hinges on the donations we receive and the availability of pantry and hygiene items. Without consistent support, we can only do so much.
Another notable struggle happened last year when a disgruntled client launched a cyber attack against us after being evicted from our property and program. Despite winning in court, the damage was done; false claims about our organization still circulate on various online platforms. This unfortunate incident serves as a potent reminder that while we strive to positively impact thousands of lives, the actions of one angry individual can threaten to undermine our efforts. However, we remain committed to overcoming these challenges and continuing our mission of kindness and support for those who need it most.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
At Kindness Between Friends, we are dedicated to empowering individuals and families facing housing insecurity, food scarcity, domestic violence, and low-income challenges in Bucks and Montgomery County. Our mission is to provide compassionate, long-term support through personalized resources and life skills education, helping clients transition from crisis to stability.
We offer emergency shelter, advance hunger relief, and improve the lives of women and children. Additionally, our holiday program distributes over 10,000 gifts to local children and provides over 400 Thanksgiving and Christmas meals, ensuring a brighter holiday season for families in need.
By investing in education and support, we aim to break the cycle of poverty and foster a resilient community. Every dollar donated helps us stand by our clients throughout their journey, transforming lives and building a brighter future for generations to come.
