Today we’d like to introduce you to Mike Zappitelli.
Hi Mike, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’m a second-generation builder, my father started in construction, so I was exposed to the trade at a young age. Some of my earliest memories are being around job sites with him, seeing firsthand the work, the discipline, and the pride that goes into building something the right way. That stuck with me early on and understanding that your name is tied to everything you put out there.
As I got older, I knew I wanted to follow that path, but I also wanted to earn it. I spent years working in the field, learning every aspect of the business from the ground up. Long days, tough conditions, and real hands-on experience that shaped how I approach building today. It gave me a deep respect for the craft and for the people behind it.
Starting Zappitelli Homes was about taking what my father built and elevating it, bringing a higher level of detail, communication, and overall experience to our clients while staying true to the values I was raised on.
Now, as a father myself, it means even more. It’s not just about building homes, it’s about building something my family can be proud of and creating a legacy that my son can look at one day and understand what it took to build it the right way.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Like most things worth building, there have been a lot of challenges along the way.
Early on, one of the biggest struggles was proving myself, not just to clients, but within the industry. Being a second-generation builder comes with pride, but it also comes with expectations. I felt a responsibility to live up to what my father built while also trying to carve out my own identity and earn trust on my own.
There were also the day-to-day challenges that come with this business, managing projects, navigating market shifts, dealing with rising costs, and making tough decisions that impact both the business and the people we work with. It’s not always visible from the outside, but there’s a lot that goes into keeping everything moving forward.
I’ve also learned that growth comes with pressure. As the company has expanded, so has the responsibility, to our clients, our team, and our reputation. There’s no shortcut for that. You learn through experience, through mistakes, and by staying consistent even when things get difficult.
But those challenges are what shape you. They force you to get better, more disciplined, and more focused on what really matters. Looking back, I wouldn’t change that part of the journey! It’s what built the foundation for where we are today.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
At Zappitelli Homes, we focus on hands-on craftsmanship. Every project is personal…I’m on-site, in the trenches, making sure the work is done right and the details are never overlooked. We build custom homes and remodels that aren’t just beautiful, they’re built to last, with quality you can see and feel.
We’re known for treating every project like it’s our own home. That means putting in the work, staying involved from start to finish, and being honest and straightforward with clients along the way. There’s a pride in doing things the right way with no shortcuts & no corners cut.
What I’m most proud of is creating homes that families love and can grow into, homes that carry the same values I learned from my father: hard work, integrity, and respect for the craft. What sets us apart is that combination of blue-collar work ethic, personal involvement, and a focus on family. We don’t just build houses…we build homes and relationships that last.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
If you’re just starting out, my biggest advice is to get your hands dirty and learn the trade from the ground up. There’s no substitute for experience and spending time on job sites, understanding the work, and seeing how every piece comes together is what builds real skill and confidence.
I also wish I knew how much patience and persistence matters. It’s easy to want things to move fast, but this business rewards the people who stick with it, even when it’s tough. Mistakes will happen, projects will get complicated and sometimes you’ll feel like you’re moving uphill but those are the moments that teach you the most.
Finally, respect the people around you. Every team member, subcontractor, and client is part of the process. How you treat them matters just as much as the work itself. Do the right thing, stay hands-on, and focus on quality and it will pay off in ways you can’t always see at first.
