Hidden Gems: Meet Deborah Hornick of Vacations on the Sea

Today we’d like to introduce you to Deborah Hornick.

Hi Deborah, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My pageant journey began at the age of sixteen. Some of my friends were competing, and it looked like fun—so I thought, why not? What started as a teenage leap of faith quickly became something much bigger.

I went on to compete in the Miss America Organization for five years, where I gained invaluable interview skills, confidence, and poise, and was able to fund nearly my entire college education through scholarship. Even more impactful, it was where I first discovered the power of pageantry as a platform for service and leadership.

After stepping away to build my family, career, and deepen my community involvement, I later returned to pageantry with a renewed sense of purpose. Through that journey, I was honored to earn the titles of Mrs. Pennsylvania Galaxy and All American Royal Queen.

Today, pageantry is no longer just something I do—it is part of how I serve. I use my titles to amplify causes close to my heart, support nonprofits, honor veterans, empower youth, and encourage women to lead with confidence, compassion, and courage

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it absolutely has not been a smooth road—and I think that’s what makes the journey so meaningful.

As a young competitor, my ultimate dream was to win a state title and compete for Miss America. I poured my heart into that system, and when I placed First Runner-Up to Miss Delaware, I was devastated. It felt like the door to my dream had closed. My heart was truly shattered. I had invested years of work, hope, and identity into that goal, and walking away without that title was incredibly painful.

But what I couldn’t see then was that God had other plans.

Just six months later, I chose to take a leap of faith and compete in a different system. That decision changed everything. I went on to win Miss Delaware USA and had the opportunity to compete on the national stage for Miss USA—something I never could have imagined when I was sitting in that disappointment.

That season taught me that setbacks are not the same as endings. Sometimes they are redirections. It taught me resilience, humility, and trust, and it reshaped the way I view success. Winning Miss Delaware USA didn’t erase the heartbreak—but it redeemed it. It showed me that what feels like a closed door can actually be the opening to something even greater. I have competed for over 30 years, winning over 25 titles on the state, national and international level.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My husband Chris and I own a travel agency called Vacations on the Sea. At its heart, our business is about more than booking trips—it’s about creating meaningful experiences, building relationships, and using travel as a way to connect people, celebrate life, and give back.

We specialize in cruise vacations, all-inclusive resorts, and custom travel experiences, working with individuals, couples, families, and groups. We are known for providing high-touch, concierge-style service—from the first conversation through return home. Our clients don’t just receive an itinerary; they receive guidance, advocacy, and support every step of the way.

What truly sets Vacations on the Sea apart is that we intentionally operate as a mission-minded small business. We partner with nonprofits, community organizations, and service groups to create fundraising opportunities through travel. We use our platform to help organizations raise awareness and funds while giving supporters something meaningful to look forward to. Travel becomes both an experience and a vehicle for impact.

Because of my background in nonprofit leadership, community engagement, and volunteerism, our brand is deeply relationship-driven. We don’t focus on transactions—we focus on people. Many of our clients become long-term partners, repeat travelers, and friends.

Brand-wise, what I am most proud of is that Vacations on the Sea reflects our values. We are a business built on service, integrity, and heart. We’ve created a brand that supports families making memories, couples celebrating milestones, organizations funding their missions, and individuals finally taking the trip they’ve dreamed about.

What I want readers to know is that when they work with Vacations on the Sea, they are supporting a small, family-owned business that genuinely cares. They receive professional expertise, personalized planning, and a business that believes travel should be joyful, seamless, and meaningful. Whether someone is planning a once-in-a-lifetime vacation, a group trip, or a fundraiser, our goal is always the same: to serve well, create unforgettable experiences, and leave people better than we found them.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
There are several meaningful ways people and organizations can work with me, collaborate with me, and support what I do.

First, individuals and families can support my work by choosing to work with our small business, Vacations on the Sea, for their travel needs. Whether it’s a cruise, all-inclusive resort, group trip, or a custom vacation, working with us not only supports a family-owned business, but also helps fuel the nonprofit partnerships and community initiatives we are passionate about.

Second, nonprofits, schools, and community organizations can collaborate with us to create fundraising travel opportunities, incentive trips, or group experiences that raise both funds and awareness. A current example of this is our fundraiser cruise benefiting Operation We Care, scheduled for September 2027, supporting their mission to serve veterans and military families. These types of partnerships allow organizations to build community while advancing their cause.

Third, businesses and corporate partners can work with me through community campaigns, sponsorships, fundraising initiatives, and cause-driven collaborations. My background in nonprofit development and community engagement allows me to help create partnerships that are purposeful, professional, and mutually beneficial.

Fourth, organizations can collaborate with me in my role as a titleholder and community advocate. I am available for speaking engagements, hosting events, nonprofit spotlights, youth empowerment initiatives, veteran-focused events, and awareness campaigns. I use my platform to amplify causes, engage volunteers, and connect organizations with the public.

And finally, people can support my work simply by sharing, engaging, attending events, volunteering, traveling with us, and spreading the word about the organizations and causes I represent. Visibility matters, and community grows when people lift each other up.

At the heart of everything I do is collaboration. Whether through travel, nonprofit partnerships, speaking, or community service, I am always open to working with others who want to make a positive impact.
