Today we’d like to introduce you to Angel Taylor.
Angel, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I began my media career in radio in 2014 as a promotions and programming intern at Wired 96.5 and 92.5 XTU. I was also given the opportunity to co-host Friday evening shows with Buster on Wired 96.5. Later that year, I moved to Los Angeles and worked as a red carpet reporter for Entertainment Scoop, a Hollywood intern for AwesomenessTV, and an assistant to the Kardashian and Jenner family.
I graduated from Temple University in 2015 with a B.A. in Media Studies & Production from the Klein School of Media and Communication. In 2016, she earned an Emmy Award for Outstanding Trans-Media Sports Coverage as an associate producer for the Rio Olympics.
After graduation, I became a sideline reporter for Women’s Field Hockey and Women’s Basketball with Penn Sports Network at The University of Pennsylvania. From 2014-2020, I have been blessed to be featured on TMZ with FOX29, ESPN3, and NBC10.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There will always be challenges as a Black woman in media. However, I’ve learned that being true to myself will bring opportunities that are meant for me. The main challenge I had to overcome early in my career was the discussion of “professional” hair in media. I was often told that I cannot wear my natural hair during live interviews and that my hair must remain straight.
Although it was discouraging at the time, I’ve learned to embrace all the beauties of my hair and stand as a representation for young Black and Brown girls who also has dreams of media. I love that natural hair is becoming more common in the media today and am excited to see its continued growth.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am the podcast host and creative of ‘All of the Above’ podcast, which is an hour-long internet radio podcast that explores a wide range of topics, including current events, entertainment and pop culture.
Since its debut on February 8, 2017, on the PHL Radio app, All of the Above has been dedicated to promoting and highlighting local creatives, independent music artists, visual artists, entrepreneurs, authors and Black-owned and small-owned businesses in Philadelphia. The show serves as a hub where individuals can share their stories with a broad audience, championing a supportive community for emerging talent.
In addition to in-studio and virtual interviews, the platform provides red-carpet coverage and on-site reporting from community festivals and major events. All of the Above is also known for its exclusive celebrity interviews, including Lance Gross, Sanaa Lathan, Mya, Tommy Davidson, among many others.
I am most proud of the journey my podcast has led me for the past 9 years. I began my podcast before podcasting became popular and it’s humbling to say that I have been in the game for almost a decade while many other have not made it past 5 years.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Networking is key in the entertainment industry. The person you meet and connect with could lead you to your next opportunity. Always remaining a student of the game and learning new trends has worked well for me. It’s common to want to stick to what you know, but growing with new trends is what helps you remain relevant.
